The Hydration Trend I Can’t Get Behind, and Here’s Why…

I’ve noticed recently that everyone has a new accessory. Not a designer handbag, no, but a portable Stanley drinking cup which you can take everywhere - a sip through a straw.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m all for staying hydrated, and I too enter a blind panic if I’m thirsty for even a moment. But I want to let you in on a secret: this is a trend I just can’t get on board with.

If you’ve worked with me in person, you’ll know I’m skin health obsessed. Yes, I want you to look your absolute best, obviously, but I truly believe that healthy skin and a healthy body go hand in hand, and that’s where truly glowing, radiant skin begins.

We now live in a world where we rarely see movement lines, otherwise known as wrinkles, so we’ve become accustomed to wanting to erase them by whatever means possible. You may see an aesthetic clinician, or you may work with a holistic practitioner like myself. My methods involve fascia work, facial massage, facial cupping, facial exercises, and targeted skincare.

I’m pro aging. I champion the women who are taking a different path to the mainstream. I love smile lines around the mouth and eyes. I love a face with a map of a life lived, and I long for us not to lose the individuality we once embraced. That being said, there’s absolutely no judgement on your personal path.

Back to the Stanley with a straw, something that creates a movement akin to smoking a cigarette, which leads to the lovingly termed “smoker’s lines.” And by gosh, are they some of the hardest to soften once they’ve made themselves at home.

Any repeated movement over time will naturally create fascia adhesions. This is when the fascia under the skin becomes almost stuck in that position, causing (you guessed it) a wrinkle. The more often you make a conscious movement, the more likely it becomes subconscious. You may even start doing it in your sleep, just like jaw clenching or teeth grinding.

So, if you’re looking to minimise movement lines around the mouth, ditch the straw. Take the lid off and drink from it directly. Use a boring wide necked bottle. Grab a glass. Go back to basics. But stay hydrated — hydration is key.

My advice? Try facial cupping. Use your facial reflexology tool to relax adhesions in the fascia. Incorporate a vitamin A based product into your routine. Nourish your body from within. And of course, keep drinking water… just not through a straw.

Facial Cups
£18.00

The Kyushi Facial Cups are Medical grade silicone which is hypoallergenic, latex-free, contains no toxins, BPA free and is also nonporous and so resists bacterial growth

Why do I love them?

They are super easy to use, pop on your favourite Kyushi face oil (this technique also helps with absorption) squeeze and glide working from the inside of the face out. Amazing for lymphatic drainage, moving stagnation and toxins, skin regeneration by pulling nutrient filled blood to the surface, sculpting, toning, defining and depuffing, and you can even do it while your sat on the sofa!

For optimal results:

Week one - 5 mins every day,

Week two - 5mins every other day

From week three onwards - 5 minutes 3 times a week.

My first question when I started learning to use them, Ive had cupping on my back and I really dont want a bruised face, a valid question I thought and one you may have too. So bruising only happens when the cup isnt moved, you'll know if youve had body cupping the cups are placed then left for a few minutes and removed. The moral of the story, dont leave the cup hanging out on your face long enough for a facial cup love bite. With facial cupping we always gently squeeze and glide, then squeeze and remove. Simples. If you're worried practice the squeeze and release action on your thigh or forearm first.
